On April 24–25, 2025, the CPE SMARTNESS center held its second annual workshop at the Casa do Professor Visitante (FUNCAMP), located at UNICAMP in Campinas, São Paulo. The event gathered researchers, students, and representatives from academia and industry for two days of presentations, discussions, and technical demonstrations focused on cutting-edge topics in networks, computing, and emerging technologies.

Representing LERIS/UFSCar, Prof. Fábio Luciano Verdi joined the full agenda of activities and played a key role as moderator of one of the roundtables on the second day of the event. His participation contributed to strengthening LERIS’s presence in national collaborative efforts around networking, systems, and innovation.

Day 1 – Internal Planning and Group Work

The first day of the workshop was reserved for internal discussions among SMARTNESS members, including teams from UNICAMP, UFSCar, the Federal University of Uberlândia, and Ericsson Research Brazil. The day began with the presentation of the annual scientific report and continued with planning sessions and group discussions on research strategies, project management, outreach, and science communication.

Day 2 – Open Sessions, Keynotes, and Demos

On the second day, the event welcomed a broader audience and featured a diverse program, including:

  • A keynote lecture by Prof. Israat Haque (Dalhousie University, Canada), on the development of AI-driven 5G technologies.
  • A presentation by Prof. Luciano Mendes (INATEL) on the xGMobile project and the Brazil 6G initiative.
  • Three roundtables discussing:
    • Experiences from large research centers
    • Public-private partnerships
    • Management of complex research initiatives

Prof. Fábio Verdi served as moderator for one of these roundtables, facilitating a rich dialogue among participants and reinforcing the importance of coordinated efforts between academia and industry in advancing technological frontiers.

Live Demonstrations

Throughout the event, SMARTNESS teams showcased live tech demos during breaks, including:

  • An extended reality (XR) demo app
  • A virtual reality showroom
  • A drone simulator

A Platform for Co-creation and Strategic Planning

More than just a showcase of progress, the workshop was a strategic platform for co-creation and future planning. The collaborative environment fostered dialogue across disciplines, guided the center’s next steps, and strengthened its mission to connect research, innovation, and societal impact.

From December 9th to 12th, researchers from LERIS took part in the ACM CoNEXT 2024, a premier international conference on emerging networking technologies, held this year at UCLA, in Los Angeles. Representing the laboratory, PhD students Guilherme Matos and Washington Silva participated actively in the event, presenting their research during both the Student Workshop and the Main Track poster session.

Guilherme Matos presented his work entitled “DECOMPOSER: Functional Decomposition of Monolithic Applications to Heterogeneous Resources in Disaggregated Environments”, which explores novel strategies for offloading application components to diverse hardware in disaggregated datacenter environments.

Washington Sousa showcased the paper “Delivering Augmented Reality to the Edge: An Approach Toward Object Recognition through the In-Network Computing Paradigm”, addressing how edge computing and programmable networks can support AR applications with low latency and energy efficiency.

Both papers were selected for oral presentation at the Student Workshop and later featured in the poster session during the main conference, offering visibility and fostering discussions with leading researchers in the field.

The participation in CoNEXT 2024 reinforces LERIS’s commitment to high-impact research and its growing presence in top-tier international venues. The conference provided a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and exposure to cutting-edge advancements in networking and distributed systems.

Prof. Fábio Verdi has been invited to join the program committee for the ACM SIGMETRICS Student Research Competition (SRC) 2024. This prestigious event offers a unique forum for undergraduate and graduate students to present their original research at well-known ACM sponsored and co-sponsored conferences before a panel of judges and attendees. The SRC consists of two rounds of competition, held at conferences, and a grand finals competition.

The First Edition of São Carlos Experience happened on October 25, with participation of Prof. Fábio L. Verdi. He talked about his research topics, 5G/6G and the CPE SMARTNESS, presenting the Engineering Research Center that brings together Unicamp, USP and UFSCar in an initiative financed by Fapesp and Ericsson, focusing on Smart Networks and Services in the context of applications for 5G and the evolution to 6G.

The São Carlos Experience was created to strengthen connections and widely publicize companies, people, institutions, businesses and inspiring local and global cases, through lectures, debates, workshops, shows, artistic interventions, tourism and lots of gastronomy.
